Your Social Media Needs a Cleaning: The Checklist You Can’t Ignore

Pause for a minute this morning and take a quick look at your social media profiles.

It’s easy to think, “Everything looks fine, there’s nothing to update.” But strategies, bios, and profile details can become outdated before you even realize it.

Considering people spend around two hours a day on social media, it’s safe to say that things like your bio, saved links, and pinned posts are some of the first things people look at when they land on your page.

Here are a few things we recommend reviewing during your next social media cleaning sweep.

Refresh your bio (and make sure there’s a clear CTA)

Your bio is often the first thing someone reads when they land on your page.

But many businesses forget to revisit it.

Take a minute and ask yourself:

  • Does it clearly explain what we do?

  • Does it speak to the right audience?

  • Is there an obvious next step?

A strong bio usually answers three simple questions: who you help, what you do, and what they should do next. Use this space to guide someone toward taking action, and not just describe what you do.

Review pinned posts

Pinned posts have opened up a world of opportunities for businesses to feature important information, updates, or promotions front and center.

On Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, you can pin content that stays at the top of your page. This is the first content new visitors will likely see, so ask yourself…

  • Does our pinned content still represent our brand?

  • Is it introducing who we are?

  • Is it showing our best work?

Many businesses rotate pinned posts seasonally to feature things like:

  • A brand introduction

  • A client success story

  • A helpful educational post

  • A current promotion or event

Clean up old links and information

Another quick but important step is to check your links.

Keep an eye out for broken links, outdated landing pages, or expired promotions, as they can quietly hurt your brand credibility.

Review things like…

  • Link-in-bio tools

  • Website links

  • Event pages

  • Contact information

This will help you make sure everything still points to the right place.

Revisit your content pillars

If your content isn't giving you the same satisfaction as it used to, your content pillars may need a reset.

Content pillars are the core topics your brand consistently posts about.

For example, many businesses rotate between things like…

  • Education

  • Behind-the-scenes

  • Community involvement

  • Customer Testimonials

  • Employee highlights

  • Branded content

  • Trend-based posts

When these pillars are clearly defined during your planning process, it becomes much easier to build content calendars and maintain consistency.

Audit your recent posts

Take a look back at the past 30-60 days of posts, and find out what performed well or what didn't.

Patterns usually appear quickly. Take note when posts from certain content pillars get more saves, engagement, or outperform other content types. That’s valuable information, and it can help you redefine your strategy.

Update Instagram Highlights

Instagram Highlights are one of the most underused branding tools on the platform.

For businesses, they can act like a mini website menu for your profile, if used correctly.

But many businesses still have outdated highlights or random stories with no organization.

Consider creating highlights that answer the most common questions your audience has:

  • Services

  • About us

  • Reviews

  • FAQs

  • Behind the scenes

  • Events

Think of highlights as a way to guide new visitors through your brand story.
